·

Startups in September raised $55.1 billion across 592 deals, compared with $44.7 billion across 502 deals in August. Deal volume increased by almost 18%, while total funding rose by approximately 23%.

Much of the increase came from later-stage financing. Series C funding climbed to $7.71 billion, Series D more than doubled to $8.77 billion, and Series E reached $4.82 billion. At the same time, early-stage activity also strengthened, with more pre-seed, seed and Series A deals recorded during the month.

Brand Naming Patterns

Dictionary Words Continue to Carry Strong Brand Value

September included brands such as Bird, Mind, Instinct, Clay, Capacity, Haven, Circle, Light, Magic, Relay, Savvy, Sugar and Wonderful. Familiar dictionary words are easy to say, easy to remember and broad enough to support companies as they expand into new products or markets.

Descriptive Names Signal the Category

Names such as Blue Fire AI, Tangent Robotics, Jipur Robotics, Locus Robotics, Hubble Network, Synapse Analytics and Poseidon Aerospace make the company’s field clear immediately. Terms like AI, Robotics, Network, and Aerospace add useful context, especially in technical markets, though they can also make the brand more category-specific.

Personal Names as Brand Names

Names such as David, Frank, Harvey, Heidi, Kanu, Emilia, Ema, Eve, Elio, Mika and Mona show how personal names can create a more familiar and human brand identity. Personal names can make a company feel more approachable and relatable, while also giving the brand a distinct personality that can work across different products and markets.

Short Names Stay Effective

Names such as Rig, Nua, Nix, Nex, Rune, Reco, Sela, Zero, Wint, Firi and Sol show the continued appeal of short brand names. They are quick to remember, easy to search, type and share, and they also work well visually across logos, apps and product interfaces.

What September’s Funding Data Suggests for Founders

More Deals, More Capital

September was a stronger month than August, with total funding rising from $44.7 billion to $55.1 billion and deal count increasing from 502 to 592.

But the growth was not even across every stage. Series A had more deals, yet slightly less capital overall. That suggests investors were still willing to back more companies, but they were careful about how much they committed.

Later-Stage Funding Drove the Biggest Increase

Series C rose from $5.34 billion to $7.71 billion. Series D increased from $3.64 billion to $8.77 billion, even though the number of deals fell from 15 to 13. Series E climbed from $891 million to $4.82 billion.

At these stages, companies already have customers, visibility, partnerships and a stronger public profile. Naming and domain choices become more exposed as the business grows.

Strong Domain Coverage Becomes More Important With Scale

Of the 592 funded companies analyzed, 351 used .com, representing 59% of the September list. While that is down from 64% in August, .com still leads every other extension by a wide margin.

243 companies, or 41%, operated on an Exact Brand Match (EBM) domain name. An EBM domain is the most intuitive choice for users searching for a company online, helping improve visibility and protect the brand identity.

Some companies go further with a broader domain strategy. Hubble Network owns both HubbleNetwork.com and Hubble.com, while Noxtua owns Noxtua.com and Noxtua.ai, giving each company stronger control over how its brand is found and represented online.

The Strategic Takeaway

September shows that stronger funding does not remove investor discipline. More companies raised capital, but much of the biggest funding was concentrated in established businesses and strategically important sectors.

For founders, the same principle applies to naming and domains: early flexibility is useful, but long-term clarity matters.

The ideal domain does not always need to be acquired on day one. But founders should know what that domain is and treat it as part of the company’s growth plan.

As awareness, funding and customer reach increase, the value of owning the right domain usually increases with them.
