What Domain Strategy Do Unicorns Actually Follow?

ยท

Startup advice changes every few months.

Domain name strategy doesn't.

An analysis of 1,682 unicorn companies reveals a remarkably consistent pattern. Despite operating across AI, fintech, healthcare, logistics, and dozens of other sectors, the majority ended up on the same type of domain:

An Exact Brand Match .com.

The Pattern Is Hard to Ignore

Across the companies analyzed:

  • 68.1% operate on an Exact Brand Match .com
  • 14.5% use a modified .com
  • 17.4% operate on non-.com extensions

Many didn't launch that way.

Some upgraded after fundraising, others after rebranding or acquisition. The end result is far more consistent than the starting point.

Brandability Follows the Same Pattern

The analysis also measured linguistic brandability across every domain.

The average unicorn domain scored 85.

Companies using exact-match .com domains averaged 88.

Non-.com domains averaged 74.

The difference extends beyond the extension itself. Exact Brand Match .com domain names also tend to be shorter, easier to pronounce, easier to remember, and more closely aligned with the company brand.

The Strongest Domain Names Share Similar Traits

The highest-scoring unicorn domains include:

  • goat.com
  • dune.com
  • glia.com
  • pave.com
  • tyme.com
  • deel.com
  • pipe.com
  • keep.com

They are concise, easy to pronounce, and memorable after a single exposure. Hearing the company name naturally leads to the correct web address.

The Lowest Scores Tell a Different Story

At the other end of the ranking are longer domains built around modifiers, multiple words, unfamiliar extensions, or more complex structures.

Examples include:

  • shift-technologies.com
  • fresh-scm.cn
  • diffuse.ly
  • lead.bank
  • reflectionai.xyz

These companies reached unicorn status, but their domains score lower on memorability, pronunciation, and brand clarity.
