Folk is a personal AI assistant built to live inside the messaging apps people already use.
When founder Arlan Rakhmetzhanov launched the Folk beta, the product lived on getfolk.app. The domain served its purpose at launch, but it added two elements to an unusually strong one-word brand: the “get” modifier and the .app extension. Someone hearing about Folk still had to learn that the company lived at getfolk.app rather than folk.com, the Exact Brand Match (EBM)domain name for the brand.
That changed when Folk secured folk.com. Rakhmetzhanov announced the upgrade on LinkedIn simply: “drop the get. just folk. it’s cleaner. say hi to folk.com.”
The announcement captured the value of the move. Folk became both the name people hear and the domain they type.
That becomes particularly relevant in fundraising.
Folk.com Changes How the Company Presents
During a fundraise, investors encounter the company across introductions, email, search, product material and diligence. The domain sits behind all of those interactions, so an address that still looks like an early-stage workaround can understate the maturity of the business presenting itself.
folk.com gives the company an EBM domain name for a single-word brand, without a modifier or alternate extension to remember. An investor who hears “Folk” can reasonably expect to find the company at folk.com and does.
Paul Graham later highlighted Folk after the company raised $6.5 million following Y Combinator. The timing gives the domain move useful context: Folk entered its next financing stage with the long-term domain for the brand already secured.
The funding came from the strength of the business. The domain strengthens how that business presents to investors and removes a compromise that would otherwise become more conspicuous as the company grows.
Folk Fits a Strong Funding Pattern
The name itself adds another layer to the story.
SmartBranding’s funding analysis found that companies with a single real-word brand raised roughly twice the median of everyone else, with the gap remaining after outliers were removed.
The finding is correlational, but the underlying advantage is easy to understand. A single real word is easy to hear, repeat and remember. Pairing that name with an Exact Brand Match domain name removes the extra instruction between learning the brand and finding the company.
That is the practical difference between getfolk.app and folk.com.
With getfolk.app, someone introduced to Folk also had to remember how the domain differed from the brand. With folk.com, the brand itself gets them there.
Fundraising Raises the Standard for the Domain Name
A domain that works at launch can become less suitable for the company presented in a later financing round.
Investors are underwriting the business several years ahead, so the assets around the brand are viewed against that larger ambition. An Exact Brand Match domain name such as folk.com gives Folk an address it can carry through future rounds, broader distribution and a larger market position without another namespace decision waiting in the background.
That creates a useful question for founders entering a raise: does the current domain name fit the company investors are being asked to finance?
Exact Brand Match domain name gives the brand a permanent, credible home that can hold up as the company becomes more visible.
Benchmark the Domain Against the Companies You Want to Join
The Grails Fundraising Soon? toolkit includes a broader set of tools for founders preparing to raise, from domain strategy and valuation to investor-facing benchmarks.
Three of those benchmarks are particularly useful for understanding where a company’s domain sits in the market.
The Funding Stage Benchmark shows how domain choices change across funding stages, allowing founders to compare their current position with companies raising at a similar level.
The https://grails.com/insights/industry-benchmark adds sector context, showing how domain strategies differ across industries and where a company sits relative to funded peers in its own market.
The Unicorn Domain Benchmark provides the longer-range view, examining domain choices among companies that have already reached billion-dollar valuations.
Taken together, these three benchmarks place the domain against the reference points that matter most in a fundraise: stage, sector and the level of company being built. The wider toolkit then helps founders evaluate the domain from the financial, strategic and fundraising angles around that decision.
